Why Visit Japan?

It seems like everyone is heading to Japan these days. Don’t get us wrong; we completely understand why—Japan is utterly enchanting! But where exactly should you go? Japan can feel overwhelming. With its vastness, countless must-see destinations, and unique cultural norms, it is indeed very different from our own country.

You might be wondering about the perfect Japan itinerary and how much such a trip might cost. Japan is known as a rather expensive holiday destination, but is that really true? To make sure you hit all the hotspots during your Japan itinerary, here’s the ultimate three-week guide packed with all the unforgettable places you shouldn’t miss in this incredible country.

Your Essential Japan Travel Preparation

Tips and Information for Your Japan Trip

  • The cheapest flights to Japan often operate from the Netherlands to Osaka.
  • No visa is needed for Dutch travelers for a stay of 3 weeks.
  • No specific vaccinations are required for Japan (always check this with your health advisor).
  • Due to soaring popularity, it’s advisable to reserve popular attractions, accommodations, and restaurants if traveling during peak seasons (spring and autumn).
  • The ideal travel period is from April to November, though summer months (July/August) can be extremely hot in cities like Kyoto; you might consider skipping them.
  • Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world! Contemporary tourists enjoy friendly and respectful cultural interactions. You can walk comfortably, even in the evening.
  • Check whether the Japan Railway Pass (JRP) is worth purchasing as recent price hikes mean it might be cheaper to buy individual tickets.

Your Perfect 3-Week Japan Itinerary

Day 1-6: Tokyo

The capital city is an absolute must! Although it’s a metropolis, Tokyo feels like a small country due to its incredibly diverse districts. Spend several days exploring Tokyo—from the world’s busiest intersection in Shinjuku to the sensory marvel of TeamLab Planets. Don’t miss the famous alley Omoide Yokocho for an izakaya meal with a highball on the side. Tokyo is uniquely quiet, organized, and easy to navigate, making it an ideal landing spot in Japan. It’s a central highlight of any Japan itinerary, as truly, there’s no city like Tokyo!

Day 7-10: Mount Fuji and the Five Lakes

One of Japan’s most iconic sights: Mount Fuji. The surrounding lakes (Fuji Lakes) are essential stops on your journey through Japan. Located on the largest, most famous island, Honshu, it’s just 100 kilometers from Tokyo. Lake Kawaguchiko is easily accessible by public transport and serves as a great base for exploration. Walk or bike around and immerse yourself in Japan’s natural beauty. Just a note: Mount Fuji is only visible on clear days!

Day 11-16: Kyoto and Day Trips

Ah, Kyoto! A city that holds a special place in our hearts. Its charm is immense, boasting a thousand shrines that captivate many travelers. From slurping oysters at Nishiki Market to strolling through the traditional Gion district, you can enjoy sunset views at the rooftop bar K36 with a cocktail in hand—Kyoto has it all! Plus, it’s a fantastic base for day trips to nearby cities like Osaka and Nara.

Day 17-20: The Japanese Alps

For breathtaking nature and untouched spots, head to the Japanese Alps—an often-overlooked area that’s a must-visit. With clear meltwater, snow-capped peaks, vast lakes, wild monkeys, and mountainous landscapes, the Japanese Alps are both surprising and diverse. The journey from Tokyo to Takayama takes about 4.5 hours, making it a great base in the region.

Day 21: Tokyo Disneyland

End your trip on a high note with a visit to Disneyland or, in our case, DisneySea—the only one of its kind in the world. Make sure to reserve your tickets in advance, and we recommend purchasing fast-passes for popular attractions to avoid long lines. Known for its intricate detail and theming, DisneySea is regarded as the most original and beautifully themed park in the entire Disney family, making it a fantastic addition to any Japan itinerary.

Budget: How Much Will a 3-Week Trip to Japan Cost?

Japan isn’t the cheapest destination compared to countries like Thailand, but it’s absolutely worth visiting for its unique blend of modern and traditional elements. Most of your expenses will go towards accommodations, meals, and transport. Many attractions, like temples, are free to visit.

Examples of expenses during our three-week Japan visit:

  • The JRP pass costs about €622 per person for 21 days.
  • Hotel prices start from around €60 per night (and can increase significantly).
  • A large bowl of ramen for dinner costs about €8.
  • For car rentals, expect to pay around €60 per day for a compact model, all-inclusive.
  • Unique overnight experiences, like temple stays in the Japanese Alps, can cost around €250 per night for two people.
  • Dining at Michelin-star restaurants typically requires advance reservations, with costs around €200 per person.

In total, we spent approximately €3000 per person, excluding the return flight from the Netherlands, which costs around €1000 direct. Thankfully, by late 2023, the Japanese yen was very favorable against the euro, saving us significantly!
