Fremantle: Discover More Than 10 Amazing Experiences You Can't Miss
Almost every resident in Western Australia we spoke to in Perth recommended visiting Fremantle, affectionately known as “Freo.” Located just 16 kilometers from Perth, this charming port city offers a unique blend of Victorian architecture, maritime history, and remnants from the days of Australia as a British penal colony. On Friday, November 12th, we boarded the Fremantle Line train from Central Station in Perth early in the morning, eager to explore this vibrant city. Read on for our experiences and tips to make the most of your visit.

Day Trip from Perth

It takes less than half an hour by car or public transport to reach Fremantle from Perth. Without a rental car that day, we happily chose the train for a pleasant trip. Traveling outside of peak hours meant the station was quiet, providing plenty of seats on the train.

Fremantle: A Must-Visit Port City Near Perth

Arriving in Fremantle

Welcoming Atmosphere

The friendliness of the people in Western Australia is truly remarkable. As we descended the platform, a local tourism representative approached us, map in hand, enthusiastically welcoming us to Fremantle. She shared insights about the city’s rich Dutch heritage upon learning we were from the Netherlands, and urged us not to miss the WA Shipwrecks Museum.

Victorian Style Architecture

No matter where you stroll, you’re bound to encounter beautiful Victorian-style buildings. From pubs and churches to residences, lovers of architecture will find plenty to admire in this historic area.

Dining and Locating Unique Cafes

With beautiful weather on our side (around 20 degrees), we decided to cool off with an iced coffee at Tonic & Ginger, located in a charming old synagogue built in 1902. The rooftop offered breathtaking views of the Scots Presbyterian Church and one of the main streets.

Exploring Local Churches

It quickly became apparent that the Scots Presbyterian Church is not the only beautiful church in Fremantle; the city is dotted with stunning religious structures, each worthy of a photograph.

Fremantle Markets

One of the highlights of Fremantle is undoubtedly the Fremantle Markets. Housed in a beautifully preserved building constructed in 1897, you’ll find hundreds of market stalls brimming with high-quality goods.

As we wandered, a German stall selling currywurst caught my eye, a personal favorite delicacy from Germany. The market provides numerous tables and chairs to enjoy your meal amidst a vibrant atmosphere. The Fremantle Markets are open Friday through Sunday, with additional hours during holiday periods.

Historic Attractions

Fremantle Prison

Not just the markets attract tourists to Fremantle; many have the Fremantle Prison on their must-visit list. A former Australian prison and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, it opens up a compelling chapter of Australia’s history.

The guided tours bring to life the stories of those who lived and worked within its walls, allowing visitors to walk through old cell blocks and even the prison’s tunnels during special tours.

WA Shipwrecks Museum

History enthusiasts will find their haven in Fremantle! The WA Shipwrecks Museum is a must-see destination, showcasing various artifacts from the Dutch East India Company, including a section of the Batavia, a ship built in Amsterdam in 1628.

The museum is free to enter, with a suggested donation, making it a unique experience worth consideration, especially for those with Dutch roots.

Boat Harbour

Relaxing at Fishing Boat Harbour

One of my personal favorite spots in Fremantle is Fishing Boat Harbour, a popular hangout for locals and tourists alike. The laid-back ambiance and diversity of restaurants make for a delightful experience.

Whatever dining option you choose, expect a spectacular view of the harbour and bobbing boats. This location is famous for its seafood restaurants, making it a paradise for fish lovers.

Little Creatures Brewery

Don’t miss Little Creatures, a vibrant brewery located near Fishing Boat Harbour. Enjoy a beer tasting session inside The Brew House, where you can explore a range of craft beers brewed on-site. Tours are also available, providing insight into the brewing process and the brewery’s history.

Charming Cafés

Stepping into Darling Darling café on Henry Street felt like entering another world. Housed in a vintage building, its pirate-themed decor made for a unique atmosphere. We enjoyed a whiskey while sitting in this enthralling environment; the ambiance was remarkably special.

Beautiful Beaches

Besides being a port city, Fremantle boasts a stunning coastline with beautiful beaches. One popular spot is Bathers Beach, surrounded by delightful beach bars. After a relaxed stroll along the coast, we enjoyed lunch at Bathers Beach House, which had a vibrant ambiance, especially with a wedding setup happening nearby.

Memorial and Observation Wheel

Visitors should also check out the Fremantle War Memorial, located on Monument Hill. This location offers a splendid vista of Fremantle’s coastline. If time permits, consider a ride on the Tourist Wheel for an aerial view of the city and its stunning harbour.

Additional Attractions

If time allows you to stay longer, be sure to visit:

  • Fremantle Arts Centre: A venue dedicated to various forms of art.
  • The Roundhouse: West Australia’s oldest remaining building.
  • WA Maritime Museum: A museum that highlights Fremantle’s maritime heritage.
  • Esplanade Park: A lovely space for relaxation with scenic views.
  • Rottnest Island: Famous for its adorable quokkas and pristine beaches.

Conclusion

As I reflect on my time in Fremantle, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia. This quaint port city, with a population of just 28,893, has captured my heart in a way that makes it a perfect companion to Perth. It’s an unmissable destination for anyone visiting Western Australia.
