I absolutely adore the Belgian Ardennes. Within just a few hours’ drive, you find yourself in a stunning landscape filled with hilly forests, medieval villages, and winding rivers. The Ardennes partially lie in the province of Belgian Luxembourg. I recently traveled there for a vacation, and below I share my best tips with you!

About Belgian Luxembourg

The province of Luxembourg is located in the southeastern part of Belgium and borders France, Luxembourg, as well as the Belgian provinces of Namur and Liège. This region is especially known for its beautiful nature, featuring vast forests, hills, and valleys. It’s perfect for those who enjoy hiking. Additionally, there are many interesting places to visit, such as the town of Bastogne, renowned for its role in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. Other attractions include the Caves of Han, the Bouillon Castle, and the Euro Space Center. And by the way, the food is fantastic!

Things to Do in Belgian Luxembourg

I went for a weekend getaway, and here are my favorite activities in this part of Belgium.

1. Visit the Medieval Town of Durbuy

Durbuy is known as the smallest town in the world. The cobblestone streets, ancient houses, impressive castle, and historical architecture take you back in time. It’s truly like walking through a living medieval fairy tale. The atmosphere in Durbuy is intimate and cozy, and you’ll find plenty of charming cafes, restaurants, and boutiques to enjoy local dishes and artisanal products. Be sure to try a unique cocktail at the quirky pirate café—it’s an entire experience!

2. Go Kayaking on the Ourthe

Durbuy is located by the Ourthe River. At Adventure Valley, you can embark on a wonderful kayaking tour. You’ll paddle past the grand castle in Durbuy and through charming villages and stunning nature. There are many spots where you can pause to relax on a beach or take a swim.

3. Put On Your Hiking Boots

The Ardennes is definitely the spot for hiking enthusiasts. The beaver walk in Marcourt is particularly special. The beaver population in the region has grown in recent years, and Marcourt is one of the best places to spot them. I was amazed by the structures and dams we encountered during the hike. Unfortunately, we didn’t spot any beavers ourselves, but the chances of seeing one are quite high.

4. Favorite Hike in Belgian Luxembourg: Ninglinspo

My absolute favorite recommendation for hiking fans is the trail at Ninglinspo, where you can choose different distances. During the hike, you follow the babbling brook through breathtaking landscapes of dense forests, lush green valleys, and rock formations. It’s an adventurous trek where you have to cross the brook multiple times via small bridges and natural stepping stones. This adds an extra thrill to the walk! When we hiked there, it was quite warm, but the dense foliage and the brook where you can cool off made it a very pleasant activity.

5. Stay in a Beautiful Accommodation

You’ll find many beautiful accommodations in the region where you can truly relax. We stayed in the largest room at The Rootz in Marcouray. From the large balcony, you have a stunning view of the green valley. Highly recommended!
