Arrival in Singapore: A Gateway to Adventure
Arriving in Singapore at 11 PM, we instantly felt the buzz of the city. Changi Airport, recognized multiple times as the best airport in the world, sets the tone for our experience. The swift and efficient passport control and baggage handling was a relief after a long flight. As we walked through the airport, we were amazed by the plethora of amenities, including duty-free shops, a cinema, lounges, a fitness center, restaurants, and a lush indoor garden where smoking is permitted. For travelers with layovers exceeding five hours, the airport offers complimentary city tours to immerse visitors in the enchanting atmosphere of the Garden City.
Our taxi ride to the city center takes only 20 minutes, further heightening our excitement. Singapore is reminiscent of Manhattan or Sydney, boasting an impressive skyline filled with unique skyscrapers. The friendly taxi driver, fluent in English, shares intriguing snippets about the city. Within just two hours, one could traverse the entire nation, which is home to five million residents, all enjoying a good standard of living. With an astonishing 80% of the population being Chinese, the city remains vibrant and secure, allowing women to walk the streets safely even at night. The rapid growth in labor demand attracts millions of workers annually.
Discovering Clarke Quay: The Heart of Nightlife
Martijn had pre-ordered nasi for our flight, and to our surprise, he was the only one who received food! Hunger struck again upon arrival, so we decided to explore local dining options. Just a five-minute walk from our hotel, we stumbled upon Clarke Quay, a vast entertainment complex that left us in awe—far grander than any venue we had encountered thus far. The nightlife here rivals that of major cities like London, New York, Paris, and Rotterdam. The modern crowd is impeccably dressed, and we found ourselves enchanted by the vibrant atmosphere.
While Boat Quay showcases charming restaurants, Clarke Quay is dotted with trendy bars perfect for enjoying cocktails and socializing. While drinks may come at a premium, the ambiance certainly makes it worthwhile.
Unexpected Surprises
Contrary to our expectations, the city’s vibe is surprisingly laid-back. Pedestrians often cross on red lights, and the streets are so clean that sitting on the ground isn’t an option. Groups of young people gather outside, sipping drinks and enjoying each other’s company. It’s an exhilarating city!
We opted for the Duck & Hippo City Tour, a combination bus and river cruise that allowed us to take in the sights. The river cruise winds through Clarke Quay, Boat Quay, and Marina Bay, offering breathtaking views both day and night. The tour includes a ride on an open-top English double-decker bus, showcasing iconic landmarks like Orchard Road—the famed shopping street lined with luxury malls, trendy restaurants, and nightlife options. We passed through Little India, Raffles Place, and the Merlion Park, where we marveled at the views of Marina Bay.
One of the standout visits was the Thian Hock Keng Temple, the oldest Buddhist temple in Singapore, and the impressive Botanical Gardens. We couldn’t miss the Singapore Flyer, the largest Ferris wheel globally, which offers a stunning 30-minute ride with vistas extending to the coasts of Indonesia and Malaysia on clear days.
Singapore was also our first stop on this journey where we finally found satay and satay sauce! These delicious skewers are sold at multiple street stalls, and we simply couldn’t resist indulging in them. We even encountered bockwurst—diffusing a delightful sense of novelty.
In no time, we realized Singapore is a prime destination—a blend of modernity, rich culture, and delicious food!
