Discover the Timeless Charm and Rich History of Autun, France – Book Your Stay Today!
In the eastern part of France lies the enchanting city of Autun, a historical gem in the Burgundy region. This ancient Roman city offers a captivating glimpse into the past, with numerous remnants of its rich heritage still visible today. In this blog, we will explore the most remarkable sights, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts.

History of Autun

The historical roots of Autun trace back to the Gallic people, who founded the city in the first century BC, designating it as their capital. Later, the Romans invaded and sought to express the power of Rome through the construction of magnificent buildings, some of which we can still observe today. During the medieval period, Autun became part of the Duchy of Burgundy, with a significant focus on religion. It was during this time that the stunning Cathedral of Saint-Lazare was built.

The Roman Theater

This theater, built in the first century AD, could accommodate around 15,000 spectators, making it one of the largest theaters in the western Roman Empire. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the site was repurposed as a quarry during the Middle Ages. In the 20th century, the theater was partially restored, including some benches; however, the stage is no longer visible.

The Temple of Janus

Just outside the city stands the impressive Temple of Janus, a 24-meter-high ruin that is around 16 meters wide on both sides. It is hard to imagine that the temple complex was much larger than what we can see today, encompassing 8 hectares! Aerial photographs reveal numerous structures, although many aren’t visible on the ground. Excavations in the area continue, including during our visit to the temple.

The Pyramid of Couhard

To appreciate this attraction fully, you’ll need to hike up a considerable incline, but fortunately, parking is available nearby. This pyramid overlooks the city of Autun from the hilltop and features a unique shape. Its purpose remains a mystery, but it is likely a funerary monument, perhaps a tomb.

The Sant Andre gate in Autun, France

The Gates of Arroux and Saint-André

In Autun, you will find some of the best-preserved Roman gates anywhere in Gaul or Italy. The Gate of Arroux, built in the early 1st century, encompasses two large archways for vehicles and two smaller ones for pedestrians. Driving through this historic structure is a special experience, especially considering that no cars would have passed through at that time.

The Cathedral of Saint-Lazare

This church, constructed in the 12th century, has undergone several renovations and restorations over the years. The sculpture work is of exceptionally high quality, and some pieces are housed in major museums like the Louvre in Paris and the Met in New York. The cathedral is situated in an area filled with medieval streets and cozy restaurants, making it a perfect spot to visit.

Place du Champ de Mars

The lively square at the heart of the city features a variety of restaurants, bars, and eateries, with a charming gazebo at its center. Ample parking is available nearby, even for larger vehicles.

Delicious Crêpes

No visit to France is complete without trying a crêpe! I highly recommend visiting So’ Crêpes, a quaint restaurant on Place du Champ de Mars that serves the best crêpes I’ve ever tasted. It’s an absolute must!

Surrounding Areas

The lush forested surroundings of Autun present excellent opportunities for delightful walks. Autumn particularly enchants with its low-hanging mist, adding a touch of mystery. You can comfortably explore the city and its surroundings in a single day; it’s about an 8-hour drive from Utrecht. This destination pairs well with a visit to the nearby city of Lyon.
